New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using these treatments should be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle management.
